Panel: IP Governance, Big Data, Data Ownership and Privacy

Presenters: Ingrid Schneider (University of Hamburg), Andrew Prescott (University of Glasgow), Walter Peissl (Austrian Academy of Science)

Panel Abstract
Information and Communication technologies are moving towards Big Data, characterised by management and predictive analytics of an ever increasing volume, velocity and variety of data in a digitised global society.

The panel will tackle emerging questions: What is new in Big Data? Can data be owned? If so, who owns them? The sources, intermediaries or commercial users? Is ownership private or collective? How can privacy be protected in an age of technological intrusion and self‐disclosure in the internet? How can and should Big Data be governed? How to relate personality rights and intellectual property? How to strike the balance between privacy, security and democracy?
